Crane Flat Fire Lookout

historic place

The Crane Flat Fire Lookout is a historic place located in Aspen Valley, Mariposa County, California. It was erected in 1931 within Yosemite National Park. This lookout was the first fire lookout structure built within Yosemite National Park. The National Park Service Landscape Division designed the two-story structure. It exemplifies the National Park Service Rustic architectural style, intended to blend with its natural surroundings. The first floor served as a garage and storage area, built partially of stone. The second story was used for observation activities. The Crane Flat Fire Lookout was actively staffed into the 1980s. Today, it serves as an educational site for visitors and is still utilized by fire crews. The lookout was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 4, 1996. Its historical significance lies in its role in the development of fire policy within federal land management agencies and as a notable example of park architecture.
