Gano, Peter, House
historic place
The Peter Gano House, a historic place in Avalon, California, in Los Angeles County, was built between 1888 and 1890. Civil engineer Peter Gano constructed this three-story Queen Anne style house. He transported building materials to the island and used his horse, Mercury, with a pulley system to move them up the steep hillside. Gano originally named his home "Lookout Cottage," which later became known as the "Holly Hill House." The house's distinctive cupola was rebuilt after a 1964 fire. As one of Avalon's oldest surviving homes, the Peter Gano House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on September 15, 1983. It is significant for its architecture and its role in Avalon's early resort development.
