Tuna Club of Avalon
historic place
The Tuna Club of Avalon, a historic place in Avalon, Los Angeles County, California, was founded in 1898 by Dr. Charles Frederick Holder. It is recognized as the birthplace of modern big game sportfishing. The club's founders, led by Dr. Holder, established rules emphasizing conservationist ethics and sporting behavior. These principles continue to influence international sportfishing standards. The current clubhouse was built in 1916, after an earlier structure was lost in the 1915 Avalon fire. The Tuna Club of Avalon was designated a California Historical Landmark and added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1991. This site represents a key moment in the development of ethical angling practices.
