William Wrigley Jr. Summer Cottage

historic place

Perched high above Avalon Bay in Los Angeles County, stands the William Wrigley Jr. Summer Cottage. This historic place, also known as Mount Ada, was built for chewing gum magnate William Wrigley Jr. and his wife, Ada, after he purchased Santa Catalina Island in 1919. Construction of this Georgian Colonial Revival style home began in March 1921 and was completed later that year. The cottage served as a summer retreat for the Wrigley family. It gained a reputation as a "Summer White House," hosting Presidents Calvin Coolidge and Herbert Hoover. William Wrigley Jr., who also owned the Chicago Cubs, could watch his team's spring training from this vantage point. The property was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. Today, this historic residence operates as the Inn on Mount Ada, offering a glimpse into the island's past. Its historical significance lies in its association with William Wrigley Jr. and his role in developing Catalina Island.
