The Jastro Building, Bakersfield
historic place
The Jastro Building, a historic place in Kern County, California, stands at the corner of 19th and G Streets in downtown Bakersfield. The initial section of this two-story structure was completed in 1917, built by Henry Jastro. In 1920, Jastro's heirs sold the building to Standard Oil, and an addition was constructed in 1921. Designed in the Late-Second Renaissance Revival style, the Jastro Building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on September 22, 1983. A historical marker notes its construction by Henry Jastro in 1917 and its listing on both the National Register of Historic Buildings and the Register of Historic Places by the Bakersfield City Council. This building holds significance as the first commercial structure in downtown Bakersfield to be built across G Street, which had previously marked the edge of the city's business district. It is also notable for being one of the few examples of its architectural style to survive the 1952 Kern County earthquake largely intact. The Jastro Building remains an important historic landmark in Bakersfield.
