Woman’s Club of Bakersfield

historic place

The Woman's Club of Bakersfield, located in Kern County, is a significant historic place. The club was incorporated on March 2, 1896, as Kern County's oldest cultural club for women. Its original purpose was the development of women in literature, science, and the arts. The club moved into its Colonial Revival style building in November 1921, located at 18th and D Streets. Architect Charles Howatt Biggar designed this building. The club has contributed to the community through its involvement in women's suffrage, efforts to save the Beale Clock Tower, and preserving California Redwoods. It also helped establish the county's first library and supported the Juvenile Justice System. The building sustained damage in the 1952 earthquake and underwent subsequent retrofitting. In 1991, the Bakersfield City Council placed the building on the Register of Historic Places. More recently, in 2022, it received designation on the National Register of Historic Places. The Woman's Club of Bakersfield continues its legacy as a philanthropic and community service organization.
