Berkeley Hillside Club

historic place

The Berkeley Hillside Club, located in Alameda County, was founded in 1898 by Berkeley women. Their aim was to preserve the natural beauty of the hills and promote environmentally sensitive development. Architect Bernard Maybeck designed the club's first clubhouse, which opened in 1906 but was destroyed in the 1923 Berkeley Fire. John White, Maybeck's brother-in-law, designed the current shingle-style clubhouse, built in 1924. This building reflects the original architectural intent. Designated a City of Berkeley Landmark in 2004, it was also listed on the National Register of Historic Places on April 16, 2004. A historical marker was erected in 2008. The club's efforts shaped North Berkeley's curved streets and natural landscape.
