Boone's University School

historic place

Here in Berkeley, California, stands Boone's University School, a historic place in Alameda County. The building at 2029 Durant Avenue began as a one-story house, constructed in 1877. In 1891, two additional stories were added, and other class and dormitory buildings were built for the school. The original structure then served as Principal Boone's home, with dormitories on its upper floors. Boone's University School for Boys was a leading private academy in California during the late 19th century. The school operated until its closure in 1915. Following its time as an educational institution, this Italianate building remained under the Boone family's ownership, functioning as a rooming house until 1980. Today, this building is the sole survivor of the original Boone's University School campus. It was designated a City Landmark on March 16, 1981, acknowledging its historical role as an example of private academies from that period.
