Bowles Hall
historic place
Bowles Hall, a historic place in Berkeley, Alameda County, was constructed in 1928. Architect George W. Kelham designed this building. It was the first residence hall built on the University of California, Berkeley campus. Mary McNear Bowles provided a grant for its construction in memory of her husband, Philip E. Bowles. The hall opened in 1929, initially housing 102 male students, and was California's first state-owned residence hall. Bowles Hall features a Collegiate Gothic architectural style. The building was designated a Berkeley City Landmark on October 17, 1988, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places on March 16, 1989. This site is historically significant as an early example of university residential architecture.
