California Hall

historic place

California Hall is a historic place in Berkeley, Alameda County. This building opened in August 1905. University Architect John Galen Howard designed California Hall in the Beaux-Arts Classical Revival style. It was one of the first structures built under the Phoebe Hearst architectural plan for the campus. Initially, California Hall housed the university's central administration and academic departments. Its functions evolved, later including classrooms and, by 1968, the Chancellor's Office and Graduate Division. California Hall was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. It was also designated a Berkeley City Landmark in 1991. This building remains a significant architectural feature of the University of California, Berkeley campus.
