City Hall
historic place
Berkeley City Hall, a historic place in Alameda County, California, was designed by architects John Bakewell and Arthur Brown, Jr. Both architects were graduates of the University of California. Construction on this Beaux-Arts Classicism building began in June 1908, and it was dedicated in August 1909. Its design was inspired by the Town Hall in Tours, France. This building replaced Berkeley's original Town Hall, which had burned down in 1904. It served as Berkeley's City Hall from 1909 until 1977. Bakewell and Brown, Jr. also designed San Francisco's City Hall. The Berkeley City Hall is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was designated a Berkeley Landmark. A historical marker at the site was erected in 1998 by the Berkeley Historical Plaque Project. This structure continues to be identified as a symbol of the City of Berkeley.
