Fox Court, Berkeley, California

historic place

Welcome to Fox Court, a historic place in Berkeley, Alameda County, California. This distinctive complex was built between 1927 and 1930 by Carl Fox and his Fox Brothers Construction Firm. Fox Court embodies a regional Northern California architectural style of the 1920s, often called 'Hansel and Gretel' or 'Medieval Dollhouse'. It presents as a small-scaled complex of one- and two-story buildings, arranged along a brick walkway through a garden court. Its features include steep gable roofs, irregular cylindrical chimneys, curved exterior staircases, and small paned windows. Carl Fox, a University of California engineering graduate, envisioned this blend of businesses and homes, providing commercial space on University Avenue and a quiet residential courtyard behind. Fox Court was designated a City of Berkeley Landmark in 1978 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. It stands as a notable example of early 20th-century Berkeley architecture and urban planning.
