Garfield Intermediate School, Berkeley, California
historic place
Garfield Intermediate School, located at 1414 Walnut Street in Berkeley, California, is a significant historic place in Alameda County. The building was constructed in 1915 as part of a city-wide school building program. Designed by architect Ernest Coxhead, it features Mission Revival architecture. This one-story structure was notable for its innovative design as a "California outdoor school." It incorporated enclosed classroom courtyards, a 400-seat auditorium, and French windows, allowing for an open plan suited to the local climate. Garfield Intermediate School was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on June 14, 1982. It also served as administrative offices for the Berkeley Unified School District starting in 1940. In 1981, the building became home to the Berkeley Richmond Jewish Community Center. The site matters historically as an early and sophisticated example of California's outdoor school architectural movement.
