Hearst Memorial Mining Building
historic place
The Hearst Memorial Mining Building, a historic place in Berkeley, California, is situated in Alameda County. Construction of this Beaux-Arts Classical Revival building began in 1902 and was completed in 1907. Phoebe Apperson Hearst financed its creation as a memorial to her husband, Senator George Hearst, a successful miner. The design was led by architect John Galen Howard, with contributions from Julia Morgan and Samuel B. Christy. Initially, the building housed the College of Mining, once the largest of its kind worldwide. A significant seismic retrofit and renovation concluded in 2002. Today, it is home to the Materials Science and Engineering Department. Recognized on the National Register of Historic Places, the Hearst Memorial Mining Building is also part of California Historical Landmark Number 946. This structure reflects a significant period in the university's history and the evolution of mining education.
