North Gate Hall, Berkeley
historic place
North Gate Hall, located in Berkeley, California, was erected in 1906. This historic building was designed by prominent architect John Galen Howard. It originally housed the first School of Architecture in the state of California. Students affectionately referred to the building as "the Ark," and Howard himself was known as "Father Noah." North Gate Hall contributed to the development of the First Bay Area Tradition in architecture, a style noted for its horizontal profiles and integration of indoor and outdoor spaces. The Architecture Department moved from the hall in 1964. Later, it became home to the Graduate School of Journalism. Recognizing its significance, North Gate Hall was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. It is also a Berkeley City Landmark. North Gate Hall stands as a notable example of early 20th-century architectural education and design in Berkeley.
