Phi Delta Theta Chapter House, Berkeley
historic place
The Phi Delta Theta Chapter House in Berkeley, California, is a historic place located in Alameda County. The Phi Delta Theta fraternity's California Alpha chapter was established at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1873. The chapter moved into its first rented house in 1874, which was the first Phi Delta Theta chapter house and the first fraternity house west of the Mississippi. In 1902, the chapter moved to its first fraternity-owned house. The current historic chapter house at 2717 Hearst Avenue was built in 1914. Architect John Reid Jr. designed this building in the Mediterranean style, reflecting the California adaptation of the Beaux Arts tradition. Among its notable residents were San Francisco attorney Herman Phlegar and William R. Hearst Jr. This property was designated a City of Berkeley Landmark on May 24, 1982, and is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Phi Delta Theta Chapter House represents a part of Berkeley's architectural and collegiate history.
