Sather Tower

historic place

Sather Tower, a historic place in Berkeley, California's Alameda County, stands on the University of California, Berkeley campus. It is commonly known as The Campanile, named for its resemblance to the Campanile di San Marco in Venice. Architect John Galen Howard designed the tower. Construction began in 1914, funded by philanthropist Jane K. Sather. The tower was completed in late 1915 and opened to visitors in 1916. Standing 307 feet tall, Sather Tower is the world's second-tallest freestanding clock and bell tower. Its original 12 bells arrived in 1917, delayed by World War I. Today, it houses a 61-bell carillon. The tower's interior also stores numerous fossils from the Department of Integrative Biology. Sather Tower was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. It remains a significant landmark of the UC Berkeley campus.
