South Berkeley Community Church

historic place

The South Berkeley Community Church, located in Berkeley, Alameda County, is a historic place. The building, designed in the Mission Revival style by architect Hugo Storch, was erected in 1912. It first operated as the Park Congregational Church. In 1943, during a period of demographic change in South Berkeley, the church re-opened. It became one of the first integrated churches in the San Francisco Bay Area, with both African American and white pastors. This site was designated a Berkeley Landmark in 1976 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2007. Its history reflects significant social integration in the region.
