St. John's Presbyterian Church, Berkeley
historic place
St. John's Presbyterian Church is a historic place in Berkeley, Alameda County. The church building was completed in 1910. Architect Julia Morgan designed the structure. It features the First Bay Tradition style, characterized by its distinctive wood-shingle exterior. The church was organized in 1907 to serve the influx of residents who moved to Berkeley after the devastating 1906 San Francisco earthquake. The congregation later moved to a new location in 1974. The original building then transitioned, becoming the Julia Morgan Center for the Arts in 1980, and now houses the Berkeley Playhouse. This site is recognized as a city of Berkeley historic landmark. It was also added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. St. John's Presbyterian Church is historically significant for its architectural design by Julia Morgan and its connection to Berkeley's early 20th-century development.
