The Corder Building, Berkeley
historic place
The Corder Building is a historic place in Berkeley, Alameda County, California. This brick building was constructed in 1900. Architect James W. Plachek designed the Corder Building in the Classical Revival style. Plachek was instrumental in the growth of downtown Berkeley during the early 20th century, designing numerous civic and public buildings in the city. The Corder Building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on January 11, 1982, and is also recognized as a City of Berkeley Landmark. Its construction filled a previously undeveloped block, marking a major step in merging smaller business districts into a continuous downtown Berkeley. This elegant structure, with its sand-colored facade, played a pivotal role in shaping the city's urban core. Today, the Corder Building houses the Shattuck Apartments on its upper floors, with a pharmacy on the ground floor. This building reflects a significant era of architectural and urban development in Berkeley.
