The Faculty Club, Berkeley
historic place
The Faculty Club, located in Berkeley, California, in Alameda County, is a historic place. Its building was dedicated in September 1902, established to provide university faculty with meals and a place for companionship. Bernard Maybeck designed the original structure, known as the Great Hall, in the American Craftsman and Arts and Crafts styles. Later additions were overseen by architects such as John Galen Howard. The Faculty Club was added to the National Register of Historic Places in March 1982. It is also a California Historical Landmark. The club's membership, initially all-male, saw gender discrimination eliminated in 1972. This site continues to be an important architectural example and a gathering place for the university community.
