University Art Museum, Berkeley
historic place
The University Art Museum in Berkeley, California, is a historic place in Alameda County. The institution was officially founded in 1963. Its first dedicated building, a Brutalist structure designed by architect Mario Ciampi, opened in 1970 on Bancroft Way. This concrete building was known for its distinctive architectural style. In 1997, it was declared seismically unsafe, prompting the museum's relocation. The original 1970 building was later added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2014. It remains an important example of mid-century architecture in Berkeley.
