historic place

Wheeler Hall, a historic place in Alameda County, California, was opened in 1917. This building on the University of California, Berkeley campus, was designed in the Classical Revival style by architect John Galen Howard. It is named for Benjamin Ide Wheeler, who served as university president from 1899 to 1919. Wheeler Hall houses the campus's largest lecture hall, Wheeler Auditorium. In 1940, Professor Ernest O. Lawrence received the Nobel Prize in Physics in Wheeler Auditorium. The building also served as a focal point for the Free Speech Movement protests during the 1960s. Wheeler Hall was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 and designated a Berkeley Landmark in 1986. It remains a significant site for both academic and historical events on the campus.
