William R. Thorsen House
historic place
The William R. Thorsen House is a historic place in Berkeley, California, located in Alameda County. Completed in 1909 for William and Caroline Thorsen, it was designed by the architectural firm Greene & Greene. The house exemplifies the American Craftsman style, known as an "ultimate bungalow". Its interior features exotic hardwoods, hand-painted friezes, and art-glass. Since 1942, the Thorsen House has been home to the California Alpha Chapter of the Sigma Phi Society. As the only Greene & Greene "ultimate bungalow" in Northern California, this house represents a significant example of early 20th-century American architecture.
