California Nursery Co. Guest House
historic place
The California Nursery Company Guest House is a historic place located in Fremont, Alameda County. This structure, also known as the President's Cottage, was built around 1907. It was associated with William J. Landers, who served as president of the California Nursery Company. Local accounts suggest that renowned architect Bernard Maybeck, known for San Francisco's Palace of Fine Arts, may have designed the cottage. However, some historical records indicate a cottage for Mrs. W. J. Landers was erected in 1916. The cottage was constructed using innovative Beaverboard, which allowed for an airy and open interior. It served as a summer home for the Landers family and later hosted gatherings for the Roeding family, who purchased the nursery in 1917. The California Nursery Company Guest House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. This site is significant for its connection to California's agricultural and architectural history.
