Fresno Republican Printery Building
historic place
The Fresno Republican Printery Building, located in Fresno, California, was constructed in 1919. Architects Edward Glass and Charles Butner designed this structure to accommodate the job printing division of the Fresno Morning Republican newspaper. The Fresno Morning Republican, published from 1876 until 1932, was a major force in early California's social, cultural, and publishing history. The building itself showcases a sophisticated interpretation of the Mediterranean Revival architectural style. Its design included features like northern exposure skylights to naturally illuminate the print shop. After the printery closed in the 1970s due to changing technology, the building was converted in 1982 into the private Downtown Club dining facility. More recently, in October 2023, the Fresno County Historical Society purchased the building. They plan to use it for their archives and potential exhibits. This historic place was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. The building's continued existence preserves a part of Fresno's early publishing and architectural history.
