Fresno Sanitary Landfill
historic place
The Fresno Sanitary Landfill in Fresno, California, is recognized as a historic place. It began operations in 1937, introducing a new method for municipal waste disposal in the United States. Engineer Jean Vincenz designed this landfill, which utilized a trench method. Waste was deposited, compacted, and then covered daily with dirt. This systematic approach helped manage waste more effectively than previous methods and became a model for sanitary landfills nationwide. The Fresno Sanitary Landfill served the city until its closure on June 30, 1987. In recognition of its historical importance, the site was designated a National Historic Landmark on August 7, 2001. This site is significant for establishing the prototype for modern waste management.
