Hotel Fresno

historic place

The Hotel Fresno, located in downtown Fresno, California, formally opened on January 8, 1913. It was constructed in 1912 and designed by architect Edward T. Foulkes. At the time of its completion, it stood as the largest and most lavish hotel in the city. This seven-story concrete building was considered a high-rise, initiating Fresno's downtown skyline. Its architectural style reflected Neoclassical, Second Renaissance Revival, and Beaux-Arts influences. The Hotel Fresno quickly became a central part of Fresno's social fabric, hosting conventions, meetings, and weddings. It was a popular destination for socializing after events at downtown theaters. The hotel closed in 1983 and remained vacant for many years. In 2018, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Beginning in mid-2019, the building underwent renovation to provide affordable housing, reopening in October 2024. The Hotel Fresno remains the city's oldest extant hotel, marking a significant period in Fresno's development.
