The Einstein House, Fresno
historic place
The Einstein House, a historic place in Fresno, California, is located at 1600 M Street. Designed by architect Edward T. Foulkes, this distinctive Craftsman English Cottage style home was completed in 1912. Its exterior features brick construction with a plaster finish, and a notable bay window with a second-floor balcony. The house was built for Louis Einstein, a prominent merchant, banker, and civic leader in Fresno County. Einstein was instrumental in Fresno's early development, supporting the city's first irrigation, gas, and streetcar ventures. He also founded the Bank of Central California in 1887 and helped organize the free library movement. Louis Einstein died in the house in 1914. In 1950, the Young Women's Christian Association acquired the property. The Einstein House provides a tangible link to Louis Einstein's significant contributions to Fresno's early 20th-century history.
