The Meux House, Fresno, California
historic place
The Meux House, a historic place in Fresno, California, began construction in 1888. Dr. Thomas Richard Meux, a physician, and his family moved into this Victorian mansion in January 1889, after settling in Fresno in 1887. Dr. Meux established his medical practice in Fresno and served as president of the Fresno County Medical Society. The house features an asymmetrical Victorian design, reflecting the eclectic architectural tastes of its era. Its exterior includes elements like towers, Corinthian cornices, and stained glass. The Meux family continuously occupied the home for over eighty years, preserving many original details, including gas light fixtures and period-appropriate interior elements. In 1973, the City of Fresno purchased the property. Following restoration, the Meux House opened as a museum in 1975 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This site is significant as one of Fresno's oldest homes, notable for its elaborate and largely unaltered architectural style.
