Warehouse Row, Fresno, California
historic place
Warehouse Row in Fresno, California, is a historic place reflecting the city's early twentieth-century development. Located on P Street, adjacent to the Santa Fe Railroad tracks, it comprises three significant buildings. The Wormser Warehouse was constructed between 1903 and 1904 for the Wormser Furniture Company. The Fresno Consumers Ice Company building also began in 1903, initially as the San Joaquin Ice Company, and changed its name in 1904. The Western Meat Company packing plant followed in 1910. These structures collectively illustrate Fresno's growth as an agricultural, transportation, and commercial center. The Fresno Consumers Ice Company, for example, was the first in Fresno to solely manufacture ice and offer home deliveries. At its peak, its workforce grew to two thousand employees during the 1920s and 1930s. In 1946, the company transitioned to cold storage. The City of Fresno designated Warehouse Row as a Local Historic Monument on April 12, 1977. It was also listed on the National Register in 1978. Warehouse Row remains a reminder of Fresno's foundational commercial and agricultural history.
