historic place
The Y.W.C.A. Building in Fresno, California, is a historic place. It was erected in 1922. The building was designed by Julia Morgan, who was the first female architect licensed in California. Morgan designed many Y.W.C.A. buildings across the western United States. The Fresno Y.W.C.A. Building blends Italian Renaissance Revival and Spanish Renaissance Revival styles. Its original purpose was to provide moderate-cost housing for young women. The building later became part of the Marjaree Mason Center, which focused on domestic violence and women's safety. In 1978, the Y.W.C.A. Building was listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. The City of Fresno also designated it a Local Historic Monument in 1978. This site is historically significant for its architecture and its role in supporting women in Fresno.
