Green Shutter Hotel, Hayward, California

historic place

The Green Shutter Hotel is located in downtown Hayward, in Alameda County, California. The building was constructed in 1920. It began operating as a hotel after a significant addition in 1926, designed by architect George L.F. O'Brien. The hotel officially opened on August 21, 1926. It originally featured 55 rooms on its second floor, with retail businesses occupying the ground level. At the time, it was the largest hotel in Hayward and experienced high occupancy rates, partly due to its location near the Lincoln Highway. The site also became home to downtown Hayward's first public parking lot. In 2004, the Green Shutter Hotel was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, the building continues commercial use, housing the Green Shutter Hotel as a single room occupancy on its second floor, alongside ground-floor retail establishments. The Green Shutter Hotel is recognized for its role in Hayward's early commercial and travel history.
