Hollywood Studio Club
historic place
The Hollywood Studio Club, a historic place in Los Angeles County, was established in 1916. It began as a chaperoned dormitory for young women pursuing careers in the motion picture business. The club offered a safe residence, along with classes and social events. In 1926, a new building opened, designed by Julia Morgan, California's first licensed female architect. This structure, built in the Italian Renaissance Revival style, provided a home for thousands of women over its 59-year existence. Many future celebrities, including Marilyn Monroe and Rita Moreno, resided here. The Hollywood Studio Club closed in 1975. It was designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in 1977 and listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. The historical marker, erected in 1977, notes its Mediterranean Revival style and architect Julia Morgan. This site is significant for its role in supporting women in the early Hollywood film industry.
