Helme-Worthy Store and Residence

historic place

The Helme-Worthy Store and Residence in Huntington Beach, Orange County, represents an early historic site. The residence, constructed around the 1880s, was moved to this location in 1903 by Matthew and Mary Josephine Helme from Santa Ana. The adjacent M.E. Helme House Furnishing Company building was then built in 1904. Matthew E. Helme was a founder of Huntington Beach and served as its fourth mayor in 1916. The store provided household supplies to the developing community. On March 31, 1987, the Helme-Worthy Store and Residence was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This residence is the oldest house in Huntington Beach. The store building is the only pre-1910 commercial structure in the city that retains its original facade and Western Falsefront architecture. Together, these buildings offer a visual record of Huntington Beach's early settlement period.
