Huntington Beach Municipal Pier
historic place
The Huntington Beach Municipal Pier, located in Orange County, California, has a history rooted in the early 20th century. A wooden pier was first built here in 1904. This initial structure faced damage from storms in 1906 and 1910. To replace it, a new concrete pier was approved in 1911 and dedicated in June 1914. At 1,350 feet, it was then considered the longest and highest solid concrete pleasure pier in the United States. The pier was extended in 1930-1931, but later sustained damage from a 1933 earthquake and a 1939 tropical storm. During World War II, the U.S. Navy used the pier as a submarine lookout post in 1941. In January 1988, severe storms caused significant damage, leading to the pier's closure. A new, reinforced concrete pier was constructed, beginning in October 1990, and re-dedicated on July 18, 1992. The Huntington Beach Municipal Pier was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. This site reflects a century of coastal development and engineering resilience in Southern California.
