Huntington Beach Public Library on Triangle Park
historic place
The Huntington Beach Public Library on Triangle Park, also known as the Main Street Branch Library, is located at 525 Main Street in Huntington Beach, California. Construction for this building began in 1949, and it opened in 1951. Designed by the architectural firm of McLellan, MacDonald and Marcwith, the library exhibits the International Style, now often called Mid-Century Modern. Its construction utilized a site-cast, concrete tilt-up method, which was considered innovative at the time. The library served as the main public library for Huntington Beach from its opening in 1951 until 1975. Triangle Park itself has an earlier history, established as a recreational park in 1912. The Huntington Beach Company officially deeded the land for the park to the city in 1917. Both the Main Street Branch Library and Triangle Park were listed on the National Register of Historic Places on April 13, 2013. This designation recognizes their significance in the community's history and architectural development. While a historical plaque was installed in 2013, its specific text is not available. The site remains an important example of mid-20th century public architecture and early city planning.
