First Congregational Church of Long Beach
historic place
The First Congregational Church of Long Beach, a historic place in Los Angeles County, was established in 1888 by Jotham and Margaret Bixby. The congregation initially met in Cerritos Hall, which was then the city's first public building. The current church building, a notable landmark, was constructed in 1914. Designed by California architect H.M. Patterson, it features a Romanesque Revival style. Its stained-glass windows are believed to be the last from Germany before World War I. Throughout its history, the church has demonstrated community involvement. It was among the first white-dominated congregations in Long Beach to racially integrate and formally welcomed LGBTQ members since 1992. Dedicated as a Historical Landmark in 1979, this site reflects a long-standing role in Long Beach's history and community life.
