Hafley, Olan G. and Aida T., House
historic place
The Hafley, Olan G. and Aida T., House is a notable historic place in Long Beach, California. Designed by architect Richard Neutra, this Mid-Century Modern residence was built in 1953. Olan G. Hafley, a General Motors executive, and his wife, Aida T. Hafley, commissioned Neutra for their home. The house features a pitched roof and cedar shingles, a design choice that was rare for Neutra. This was due to neighborhood association guidelines in Park Estates, which required a sloped roof. Neutra also designed the adjacent Moore Residence, creating a 'double house' project that allowed him to apply a single architectural language to multiple properties. The Hafley House remained in the family until 2010. It was listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on July 12, 2011. The house represents a significant example of Mid-Century Modern architecture in Long Beach.
