Middough Brothers--Insurance Exchange Building

historic place

The building known today as the Insurance Exchange Building in Long Beach, California, opened in 1925. It was originally called the Middough Building. Brothers Lorne and Way Middough constructed this eight-story Beaux Arts style office building. Their men's and boys' clothing store occupied the first floor. The Long Beach Municipal Court was an early tenant, moving into the third, fifth, and sixth floors in July 1925. The court remained in the building for five years. In 1931, the Middough brothers sold the building, and its name changed to the Insurance Exchange Building. This structure was added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 5, 2003. The building stands as an example of early 20th-century commercial architecture in Long Beach.
