Rancho Los Alamitos

historic place

Rancho Los Alamitos is a historic place in Long Beach, California, within Los Angeles County. The site was originally Povuu'nga, a sacred village of the native Gabrielino-Tongva people. It originated from the 1784 Spanish land grant of Rancho Los Nietos. In 1834, Rancho Los Alamitos was established as a separate estate. Its name means "The Little Cottonwoods." The ranch house includes an adobe core, dating to around 1804. The Bixby family were the last private owners. In 1967, Fred Bixby donated the property to the City of Long Beach. It opened to the public in 1970. Rancho Los Alamitos was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1981. A historical marker, erected in 1975, states: "Honoring the Indians of Puvungna who fished these shores long before the reign of the Dons." This site provides insight into Southern California's historical development.
