Angels Flight Railway
historic place
Angels Flight Railway, a historic place in Los Angeles County, California, first opened on December 31, 1901. It was built by Colonel J. W. Eddy to provide transportation between the city's commercial core and the top of Bunker Hill. This narrow-gauge funicular railway features two counterbalanced cars, named Olivet and Sinai. The cars travel a 33 percent grade over a distance of 315 feet. Angels Flight operated continuously until 1969 when it was dismantled as part of an urban renewal program. After being stored for 27 years, the railway was reinstalled and reopened in 1996, a half-block south of its original location. It continues to operate, carrying passengers up and down Bunker Hill's steep eastern slope. Angels Flight remains a rare surviving example of an incline railway in the United States.
