Bernard, Susana Machado, House and Barn
historic place
The Susana Machado Bernard House and Barn is located in the Pico Union section of Los Angeles. This 10,000-square-foot mansion and its carriage house were built from 1901 to 1902. John Parkinson, known for designing Los Angeles City Hall, created this Art Nouveau Gothic Revival style residence. Original owner Susana Machado Bernard's family had deep roots in Los Angeles; her great-grandfather was among the city's founders in 1781. The property remained in her family until 1962. In 1979, it was designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, the site operates as Casa Libre/Freedom House, a shelter for homeless minors. This location connects significant architecture with Los Angeles's foundational history.
