Building at 816 South Grand Avenue

historic place

The building at 816 South Grand Avenue in Los Angeles, California, was completed in 1924. It was originally constructed as an eight-story parking garage. This structure was designed by architect Claud Beelman in the Beaux Arts style. It stands as one of America's earliest multi-story parking structures. Due to its narrow lot, the design incorporated a large freight elevator capable of lifting two cars at once. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. It also holds designation as a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument. After serving as a parking garage and later as offices, the building was converted into residential lofts in the early 2000s. This site is historically significant as an early example of a multi-story elevator parking garage in Los Angeles, reflecting the city's early embrace of the automobile.
