Bullock's Wilshire Building
historic place
The Bullock's Wilshire Building in Los Angeles, California, opened on September 26, 1929. Architects John and Donald Parkinson designed this Art Deco luxury department store. It was among the first Art Deco structures in the United States. The building's exterior features terra cotta, copper accents, and a 241-foot tower. Bullock's Wilshire was notable for its innovative design, catering to the automobile. The main entrance was positioned at the rear, under a porte cochere for valet parking. A fresco by Herman Sachs, "Spirit of Transportation," adorned this entrance. The City of Los Angeles designated it a Historic-Cultural Monument in 1968, and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. Southwestern Law School now occupies the building. This site reflects significant architectural and cultural developments in Los Angeles.
