Cahuenga Branch Library
historic place
The Cahuenga Branch Library, located in Los Angeles County, California, stands at 4591 Santa Monica Boulevard in East Hollywood. This historic place opened on December 4, 1916. Its construction was made possible by a grant from steel magnate Andrew Carnegie. The library was designed by architect Clarence H. Russell in the Italian Renaissance Revival style. The Cahuenga Branch is the third oldest branch library in the Los Angeles Public Library system. It is also one of only three surviving Carnegie libraries in Los Angeles. Throughout its history, the library has served the East Hollywood community, adapting its services to meet changing demographics, including offering multilingual staff and programs. During both World War I and World War II, the library's auditorium was used for war-related activities. This site remains significant for its architectural design and its enduring cultural role in the community.
