Case Study House No. 20

historic place

Case Study House Number 20, also known as the Bailey House, is a significant historic place in Los Angeles County, California. This residence was designed by architect Richard Neutra and completed in 1948. It was part of the Case Study House program, initiated by Arts & Architecture magazine to explore modern, efficient, and affordable housing designs after World War II. The house was built for Dr. Stuart Bailey and his wife June. It is located in Pacific Palisades, on a tract that magazine editor John Entenza developed for a collection of Case Study homes. Neutra's design for the Bailey House featured his "Four-Courter House" concept, using distinct wings to create various outdoor spaces. It also incorporated extensive glass walls to integrate the interior with the landscape. The Bailey family lived in the house for over five decades, with Neutra designing additions in 1950 and 1958. This house remains an important example of mid-century California modernism.
