Case Study House No. 22
historic place
Case Study House Number 22, also known as the Stahl House, is located in the Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles, California. Designed by architect Pierre Koenig for Buck and Charlotta Stahl, this residence was completed in 1960. It was part of the Case Study House program, an initiative by Arts & Architecture magazine to explore modern residential architecture using new materials and techniques. The house is notable for its innovative use of steel and large expanses of glass, creating an open design. Its dramatic cantilevered structure extends over the hillside, offering panoramic views of the city. This engineering feat made it one of the first residential houses in California to use a steel frame. The Stahl House gained iconic status through Julius Shulman's famous 1960 photograph, which captured its striking presence. It was designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in 1999 and later listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 2013. The Stahl House remains a significant example of mid-century modern design.
