Disney Bros. Cartoon Studio

historical marker

In Los Angeles, California, a historical marker was erected in 2024 by the City of Los Angeles, recognizing the Disney Bros. Cartoon Studio. Brothers Walter Elias Disney and Roy Oliver Disney founded this studio on October 16, 1923. Their initial workspace was in the rear of a real estate office at 4651 Kingswell Avenue, for which they paid ten dollars a month. In February 1924, the studio moved next door to its own dedicated space at 4649 Kingswell Avenue. At these Kingswell Avenue locations, the Disney brothers produced the "Alice Comedies," a series of silent films blending live-action and animation. These films were commissioned by Margaret J. Winkler. The studio operated here until 1926, when it relocated to Hyperion Avenue. This site represents the foundational period for what became a globally recognized animation studio.
