El Cabrillo, Los Angeles
historic place
El Cabrillo is a historic place in Los Angeles, California, located in Hollywood. This Spanish Colonial Revival style courtyard condominium building was designed by architects Arthur and Nina Zwebell. Built in 1928, movie mogul Cecil B. DeMille commissioned El Cabrillo. It is believed he intended it to house New York stage actors transitioning to talking pictures. El Cabrillo became a fashionable Hollywood address in the late 1920s and 1930s. It is recognized as an outstanding example of Spanish Colonial Revival courtyard housing. The building was designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in 2003 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. A historical marker, erected in 2005, identifies El Cabrillo Condominiums, built circa 1927 by Cecil B. DeMille. El Cabrillo matters historically for its architectural style and its connection to early Hollywood's film industry.
